The Russian Blue temperament is medium active.
She is alert and cautios, intelligent and inventive in her playing. The tom cats, being more athletic than females, open doors (which, of course, are unlocked). They play with simple or sophisticated toys, without getting bored of them. When they go to eat or drink water, they often take their toys with them, and when they get sleepy, they hide them (if there are other pets in the house) before going to sleep.
She is very agile, her hunter instinct is almost intact. Even
if she does not get the chance to hunt anything else except
flies, she does it with maximum focus and seriousness. When she walks,
she has the
grace of a ballerina, thus sneaking with ability, without breaking
down things around her. To jump on opened doors, to walk on tall pieces
of furniture,
even on… clothes drying wires, is not unusual for the beautiful feline.
Her relationship with other pets in the house is good, especially
if they grew up together. She enjoys playing the hunt, together
with other cats in the house, snarling and disputing the “chase” (some
fluffy toy).
Her relationship with human members of the family is very special.
Usually, she gets attached to one member of the family, whom
she follows everywhere in the house. The cat feels offended,
touched in her sensibility,
if she is rejected from various reasons, or if she is not allowed
in her favourite master’s working place. That favourite person becomes the
center of her universe, she follows him closely, thus being also named “the
blue shadow”.
She likes to do things that bring her closer to her master.
Thus, she does apport, falls asleep on the desk where her master
is writing, or nearby his computer. She likes to “take part” to her master’s
activities. Curious, the cat is everywhere “she is needed”.
Thanks to her intelligence and to her close relationship with the master,
she seems to have the ability of understanding human language. If loud
noises interrupt the cozy atmosphere she likes to live in (thunders, fireworks
or other strong noises), the Russian Blue watches her master… If
she sees him not worries, she realizes that the noises do not represent
a danger, so she tries to ignore them… If her master is upset, she
sits ground, studying him with her beautiful eyes, waiting to see how big
is the sorrow, and if she can get closer to “consolate” him.
If the master is joyful and exuberant, she looks at him in
wonder, choosing to study him from a distance. The idea is
that she likes the constancy
of the atmosphere in the house. The most pleasant moments are
the ones when her master relaxes, either at a cup of coffee
with some guests, or
listening to sourdine music, or watching TV, or reading…
Then, she deeply looks at you with her lovely eyes, with so
much love and gratitude, falling asleep with pleasure in her
master’s
arms, or in his close vicinity.
She is gourmand, and that’s why she must not have acces in the
dining room, during meals time. The reason is, in the first
place, that it is not good for her organism to eat most of
our foods. When she feels
neglected, the little blue wonder is not pushy. This does not
mean that she is not hurt by your lack of time for her. She
does not miau much; her
voice is remarcably warm, melodious and pleasant.
Her attitude towards guests is reserved, but if she sees her
master talking with them in peace, she understands there is
nothing to be afraid of, and she comes nearby the group of people. She
is not concerned
to get liked by the guests, as the one who matters most for
her is her master.
Her relationship with children is good, from the standpoint
of their security… She never attacks and she hides if the children
love her too “brutally”. She is annoyed by strident noises,
by loud music; in such cases she finds herself a peaceful spot
to redraw in.
Of course, all above mentioned regarding the Russian Blue’s behaviour
is valid only for cats correctly socialized in their first
months of life, nearby mother cat and with help from the
breeder.
Russian Blues may get horny even from 6-10 months of age. There
are cases which get horny for the first time only after one
year. Generally, cats from this breed give birth to 3-4 kittens,
but there are enough cases
with 1 baby or with 5, 6, 7. The “blue shadow” is an extremely
devoted mother, careful and attentive. If they have babies
in the same time with other females, they like to collaborate
to breastfeeding, nursing
and educating the kittens. The male is very caring with his
kittens, taking care of them, playing with them and carressing
them.
Cat Shows are not the most beloved place for Russian Blues,
but, if there are decent conditions, she gets through without
too much stress.
Neither genetic, nor health conditions are known for this breed.
If they grow up in a cozy atmosphere, in a loving family, and
if they have a good quality diet, their life expectancy is
around 15 years. It is advised to periodically supplement their diet with
vitamins, as well
as the prevention of obesity predisposition (in gourmand cats).
Any Russian Blue owner knows that there are not enough beautiful
words to describe her…
